Melbourne’s organic Japanese soup café – a perfect winter lunch break
Brim CC , a Japanese cafe located at 601 Little Collins Street, started as a Soup and Sushi café with an organic home style of cooking becoming a winner with nearby workers. The soups were proving to be such a hit that they started using the base of these soups to expand the menu and create Japanese style curries and hot dishes. By adding some interesting salads and other options they have created a classic.
On my first visit to the place I was scanning through the menu and trying to decide between the soups or the curries. At first I was leaning towards the soup and with a choice between Pumpkin and Ginger or Prawn & Potato I figured I couldn’t go wrong . Then a beef curry got carried out by a waitress and I found myself siding back towards the curry side of things.
Suddenly, as I read further down the menu I saw the words that would make any indecisive eater happy, Lunch Option, half curry, half soup. They have made a gem of a decision to cater to us patrons who can’t decide by offering half servings in the form of a meal deal. Not only is there a curry and soup deal but also a sushi and soup, soup and salad and sushi and salad deal.
The soups have a cult following amongst nearby workers with a rotating list that changes daily. If you think of miso soup as a watery dish given out free at sushi bars you need to try their miso which is transformed into to a chunky broth that comes either as Salmon Miso Soup (Salmon, Corn, Japanese radish ) or Meatball Miso Soup (chunks of meat in miso). And for those with dietary requirements there is always a vegetarian option and I believe most soups are gluten-free.
A word of warning however, if you are going to eat in, make sure you get in early as the 20 or so seats get claimed quickly.
There is much to like about the place with a strong customer service focus, great food and hearty serving sizes. Whether you opt for the curry, soup, salad, sushi, half serves, full serves or one of their unique and classy Bento Boxes (see below) you are in for a cheap lunchtime treat.
